► (1594-1665) Pintor francés. Sus obras, de excelente dibujo, son notables por su serenidad y equilibrio: Rebeca y Eliezer, El Diluvio, Moisés salvado de las aguas, El rapto de las sabinas, El Parnaso, etc.

Pintor francés. Salvo dos años que trabajó como pintor de la corte de Luis XIII, toda su carrera transcurrió en Roma, donde se convirtió en un gran admirador de la antigua civilización romana. En sus primeras obras representó temas de la mitología clásica en un estilo pictórico que evocaba a los maestros venecianos como Tiziano. Recurrió a Rafael como fuente de inspiración, y a mediados de la década de 1630 comenzó a desarrollar un estilo marcado por la claridad y monumentalidad clásica. Sus obras maestras posteriores, como La sagrada familia de la escalera (1648), emplean un estilo calculado para expresar virtud y rectitud, presentando sólo unas pocas figuras pintadas en colores chillones contra un fondo apagado. En sus paisajes, como Paisaje con Polifemo (1649), el desorden de la naturaleza se somete al orden de la geometría. Sus composiciones austeras y ordenadas ejercieron influencia sobre varias generaciones de pintores franceses, entre ellos, Jacques-Louis David, J.-A.-D. Ingres y Paul Cézanne.
